The Incas were a polytheistic culture. Their major god was Inti, the sun god. This is their creation story: There was nothing but darkness over Lake Titicaca. Inside this lake lived Virococha and his wife, Mamococha, the goddess of rain. Virococha became lonely and he asked Mamococha what he should do. Mamococha said to create a group of humans. Virococha started by making a place to for the people to live. He gathered the mud from the bottom of the Titicaca and created the mountains, plains, and valleys. He took stone and shaped it into people. The people were rocky and not full of life so Virococha got very mad and destroyed them all. Then he tried to make them again. This time he made a sun, moon, and a castle. Then he made the people in all different shapes and sizes and left to develop the land and themselves. He came to Cuzco once it had developed and saw a beautiful lady named Cahuillaca. He got her pregnant but she would not except him as the father. She ran away on a canoe and Virococha chased her and promised to come back to his creations one day.
